A straight guide to tiki, rum, and escapism
Most of what is written about tiki is either a listicle or a hagiography. The history is genuinely contested, the drink recipes were genuinely lost and then genuinely recovered, and the whole style sits on a cultural fault line that most write-ups step around.

How these are written
- Contested things are labelled contested. The Mai Tai has two claimed inventors and the Piña Colada has three. We say so rather than picking the tidiest version.
- We say when the accepted story is wrong. Thor Heyerdahl’s voyage was real and his thesis has not survived the evidence. Both facts belong on the page.
- Specs are the defensible ones. Trader Vic’s 1944 Mai Tai with no pineapple, Beachbum Berry’s reconstruction of the 1934 Zombie.
- Images are licensed or absent. Where no freely licensed photograph of someone exists, we show their initials. We do not use images we can’t license and we do not generate fake ones of real people.
